Purpose of the role

 

Senior attorney with Legal Department who will be effective in exercising seasoned judgment and providing guidance to business and functional leaders across the company with responsibility for performing a variety of moderately complex to complex legal matters and leading teams and projects, including day-to-day advice to the company and its business professionals on a range of global labor & employment matters, primarily outside of the U.S.  Responsibilities include effectively building and maintaining strong external and internal relations at a senior level; providing guidance and recommendations on labor and employment strategy, policy, and practice to the general counsel and senior management; and with the Vice President, Associate General Counsel, Labour&Employment, providing trusted business partnership and counselling on People & Culture decisions of importance to the Company

 

Key responsibilities

 

* Oversight of the global L&E team in the absence of the VP, AGC L&E, and indirect or direct management of one or more senior counsel, counsel, and staff responsible for the company-s labor & employment legal functions.
* Partners with internal clients to create proactive strategies designed to avoid or minimize exposure to legal liability while accomplishing PMI business goals.
* Effectively communicates the risks and the consequences of a given situation or course of action to business partners and develops alternatives to manage identified risks.
* Identifies and analyzes legal issues, drafts key documents, presents clear recommendations and ensures legal compliance as it relates to the noted areas of law.
* In coordination with Legal Department colleagues and outside counsel as appropriate, represents the company-s position before responsible government agencies and regulatory bodies in the jurisdictions which PMI operates regarding the noted areas of law.
* Stays current with legal developments, best practices and benchmarks in the noted areas of law and assists internal clients in implementing policies and procedures in response thereto.
* Maintains a culture with a high degree of emphasis on equity, dignity

 

Critical skills

 

* Deliver expert legal counsel on labor and employment matters; in particular supporting global and or cross-country projects requiring L&E advice such as P&C digitalization, global reorganizations and restructurings involving consultation requirements, global expansion and integration of new businesses, M&A advice pertaining to acquisitions and divestitures, third party workers, compensation and incentive programs and matters involving workforce data privacy, AI, workforce analytics and the like.
* Provide support and timely advice on employee benefits policies and best practices, including advising on leave and disability matters in countries where additional support is needed by market lawyers.
* Work, as necessary, to ensure all locations comply with their specific local and country legislation, immigration regulations, employee privacy laws and leave laws.
* Leverage experience to identify and proactively manage employee and labor relations matters outside of the U.S., including the delivery of relevant training.
* Strategically manage and provide legal support as needed for employment litigation outside of the U.S..
* Provide support and timely advice on global total rewards and executive compensation matters in support of the Compensation & Leadership Development Committee of the Board of Directors.
* Consult with various stakeholders in the development of the collective bargaining strategy and participate and/or advise in the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements in consultation with Market lawyers.
* Assist with the effective management of investigations, grievances and other employment conflicts.

 

Desired profile

 

* Juris doctor and licensed to practice law in a locale where PMI operates.
* At least 10 years of concentrated experience which demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and applied understanding of area of expertise; both in house and major law firm experience preferred; experience advising U.S. based, publicly-traded companies with international operations preferred.
* Previous managerial and leadership experience preferred.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple, conflicting priorities while managing a substantial workload and client expectations.
* Experience of working successfully in a highly results-oriented and performance-driven environment with a focus on excellence.
* Ability to maintain perspective and composure regardless of the delicacy or pressure of a situation.
* Robust interpersonal, networking, public speaking, and writing skills, with the confidence and credibility to act quickly, communicate effectively with diplomacy and civility, and command respect of both internal and external audiences.
* Proven ability to think strategically and exercise sound judgment.
* Ability to oversee complex projects and lead them to successful completion in an organized, efficient, and effective manner.\\
